Unemployed Ukrainians in Germany could lose their social benefits entirely in 2026, writes Bild.
The German Ministry of Labor has announced a further freeze on social benefits in 2026 for 5.6 million recipients, including many Ukrainian migrants.
According to the ministry, a single person will continue to receive €563 per month, while payments for children will range from €357 to €471, depending on their age.
At the same time, Labor Minister Berbel Bas proposed significantly tougher sanctions for those who do not cooperate with employment agencies. Failure to attend mandatory appointments will result in a 30% reduction in benefits, and those who refuse a job offer may lose their benefits entirely.„Wir bieten den Menschen mehr Unterstützung auf ihrem Weg zur Arbeit, aber denen, die nicht kooperieren, werden wir es deutlich erschweren“, erklärte Bas.
“We offer people more support on their way to work, but for those who do not cooperate, we will make it much more difficult,” said Bas.This applies in particular to Ukrainian unemployed people receiving social assistance in Germany. The decision will take effect after approval by the Cabinet on September 10, without the need for approval by the Bundestag.
The changes are related to the need to adjust social benefits following a decline in inflation and a revision of standard rates.
Ukrainian refugees in Europe
As a reminder, the Council of the EU has extended temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2027. It should be noted that by 2025, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians will have received temporary protection in EU member states.
At the same time, it has been announced that the German government intends to reduce the number of people receiving state cash benefits (citizen's income). This particularly affects some refugees from Ukraine.
