Boys Read – and Become Storytellers

Reading and storytelling – both passive and active – are essential for language development. Pisa studies in recent years show that many young people, especially boys, read little and develop language deficits.

The "Cool Stories" project targets boys aged 13 and older, especially those with migration or refugee backgrounds. It aims to awaken their interest in reading and train them to become role models as readers for children.

Together with a speech expert, participants receive training and later read regularly in kindergartens. Preschool children experience male reading role models – and boys discover that reading is for everyone.

They gain valuable speaking practice, improve their language skills, and build confidence. The project also helps challenge stereotypes and outdated gender roles.
The message is clear: Boys read – and they enjoy it!
