They flee from war, violence, or persecution. But even in the safety of their host country, the scars remain – often invisible, yet painful. The psychosocial care of people who have experienced displacement is a major challenge: language barriers, traumatic experiences, and long waiting times for therapy appointments make it difficult to access help.

A new study from the University of Duisburg-Essen aims to address exactly this issue – with an unusual but promising approach: art therapy. In cooperation with the Bürgerstiftung Aachen (Aachen Citizens’ Foundation) , a free art therapy group for adults with refugee experience will launch on May 28.

Creativity Instead of Words

“What makes this offer so special?” some readers might ask. The answer: No German needed, no artistic talent required. Painting, drawing, or crafting becomes a tool to express feelings that cannot be put into words. The group is intentionally small – only 8 spots per group – to create a protected environment.
