We hereby cordially invite you on February 24 at 5:00 p.m. at Rathaus Aachen and at 6:00 p.m. at Nikolauskirche to commemorate the victims together and to make a visible sign of solidarity.
February 24, 2022 marked a historic turning point for Ukraine and for Europe as a whole. With the beginning of the full-scale aggression, war returned to the center of the continent and called into question the peace that for decades had been regarded as a stable foundation of European coexistence. Four years have since passed — years of hardship, loss, and events that have fundamentally changed the lives of millions of people.
During this time, Ukraine has demonstrated determination and resilience in defending its freedom and territorial integrity. Millions have been forced to leave their homes, and thousands of families have suffered irreparable losses. At the same time, these years have become a testament to the strength of civil society, international support, and genuine solidarity.
Germany and other European countries have become places of safety for many Ukrainian families. New social networks, partnerships, and initiatives have emerged, grounded in respect for human dignity and human rights. This experience has shown that solidarity is not merely a political decision, but above all a sustained societal responsibility.
Four years of war are more than a sequence of events. They underscore the fragility of peace and the necessity of actively protecting it. Remembering the victims and supporting those who continue to live under the conditions of war remain a shared moral obligation of Europe.
On this anniversary, we come together to remember, to express solidarity, and to reaffirm our shared responsibility for the future of Europe.
