In May, one of the most important European events will take place in Aachen — the award ceremony of the International Charlemagne Prize.

This prize honors individuals and initiatives that contribute to the development of Europe, its unity, and its values. That is why it is important not only for politicians or experts, but also for us — migrants who are part of European society today.

Among the recent laureates are Volodymyr Zelenskyy (2023), Pinchas Goldschmidt (2024), and Ursula von der Leyen (2025).

On May 14, 2026, the prize will be awarded to Mario Draghi — an economist and politician who played a key role in stabilizing the European economy. Aachen is not by chance place for this event. The city has deep historical roots and is closely connected to Charlemagne — a symbol of a united Europe. Every year, leaders, thinkers, and representatives of civil society gather here to discuss the future of the continent.

As part of the International Charlemagne Prize, a rich program of events will take place throughout May in Aachen across various locations — including museums, cultural venues, the Aachen Town Hall, and other spaces. Daily meetings, discussions, and events with engaging speakers are planned.

This year, as Mario Draghi is the laureate, part of the program 2026 will focus on Italian culture — language, traditions, and cuisine. We recommend exploring the program in advance, selecting events of interest, and registering — many of them are open to the public.

We also encourage you to download the program and sign up for events that interest you — they are truly worth attending. Most events are free of charge, although some may require a small contribution.

For migrants, this is an opportunity:

- to feel part of the European dialogue

- to make new contacts

- and to see how ideas and decisions are created that will shape the future

Perhaps this is precisely the moment to not just live alongside events, but to become a part of them.

For one month, Aachen will become a place where the future of Europe is discussed—and everyone can participate.
